I suppose, its all about risk taking. When you have a dream to pursue, there's bound to have risk.. Its all about taking the risk and making it happen.
But if the result is nothing, I personally think a person would not be too devastated because you've already tried your best and perhaps that dream is just not fit for that particular person.. So its time to seek another dream..
